Sunlight and moonlight are very similar. Sunlight comes to earth directly from the sun. Moonlight, on the other hand, is a reflection of sunlight. Sunlight first hits the moon, the light reflected from the moon reaches the earth.

Sunlight is electromagnetic radiation emitted by the sun. This radiation includes infrared and ultraviolet rays as well as visible light.

Moonlight is very weak compared to sunlight. The sun itself is a light source. The moon, on the other hand, acts not as a light source but as a reflector and reflects a very small portion of the light coming from the sun to the world.

Take a mirror in your hand and point the flashlight towards the mirror at an appropriate angle. You will see that the light reflected from the mirror is reflected on the floor, ceiling or wall. This light hitting surfaces is like moonlight.

Move the mirror away and point the flashlight directly to the wall. Now the light hitting the wall is like sunlight.

When you go out on a sunny day, when you see dark gray rocks illuminated by direct sunlight, you are looking at something that looks like moonlight. Moonlight is sunlight reflected from the dark gray surface of the Moon.

The surface of the Moon is not as reflective as a mirror or as ice. On the other hand, the moon has a very large volume and a great amount of light falls on all this massive mass. Therefore, the moon reflects enough light to appear bright. If the surface of the Moon were brighter or larger, it could reflect more light.

Sunlight is hundreds of thousands of times brighter than moonlight. At night, the moonlight illuminates the earth in the range of 0.05-0.1 lux. Regions that receive direct sunlight during the day can reach 130,000 lux.

Sunlight is a key factor for the nutrition and growth of plants. Moonlight, on the other hand, cannot provide the bright light plants need.

  1. Dean says:

Moonlight is not reflected sunlight. There is no reason to think that it is such. The moon is not a dusty rock but it is a self illuminating light. It is the same size as the sun and the same distance from earth. The light from both sources is completely different from each other. Sunlight is warm whereas moonlight is cool.
