President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who made the opening speech of the Smart Cities and Municipalities Congress and Exhibition, underlined that a problematic period has started in crowded cities, especially in Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir. Erdogan stated that the emerging problems can be overcome with a smart city approach.

Erdogan said in his speech: “Every new period brings with it new needs, demands and troubles. Our issue yesterday was garbage that was not collected, our issue today is zero waste. Our issue yesterday was the transportation itself, today’s issue was the integration of the transportation systems. Our issue yesterday was fighting environmental pollution, today’s issue is to build environmentally friendly cities. We can apply these examples to any area. Cities that cannot go beyond the age are obliged to lose their charm after a while. We need both smart and civilization-friendly cities. We would not have served the cities properly without tackling these two.”

He continued his speech as follows: “The concept of smart cities emerged in the 1990s. This concept, which you can define as the application of technology to cities in its simplest form, is gaining more importance day by day. In Turkey we have also begun work to develop our own smart city strategy. Today, we have brought smart city studies to a very advanced level. We know that our municipalities are doing actual work on smart cities. With the help of smart cities, we can increase the quality of life of our people and increase the ownership rate of our citizens. ”

Drawing attention to the compatibility problem in technology investments, Erdoğan said, “It is extremely important that all smart city applications implemented are compatible with each other. Otherwise, Turkey will return to the technology dump. We do not want our country to be a technology dump. We had this problem in the past. We have to take all necessary measures to establish a compatible technology infrastructure.”

Turkey’s President Erdogan, indicating that the area of ​​smart cities with the vision of being a global player, “The smart city technologies they will not only meet our own needs, we will enter the world market as an exporter with the technology we have developed. We are determined to do whatever it takes to be a global player in this field.”
