New LED Glasses to Reduce Jet Lag, Keep Athletes Alert

Osram and German Skiing Association (DSV) are developing LED eyewear, particularly for flight passengers.

The eyewear will give the users a ‘light shower’ as it has high luminous flux, and utlilizes circadian rhythms, and will help them beat jet lag quicker by keeping the aware and awake. These glasses will also help athletes prepare for night races.

We all know that light impacts the body’s internal clock, and hence can be used to circumvent circadian rhythms keeping us alert, and boosting our concentration levels.

“The biologically effective light in these glasses helps the athletes to mobilise energy reserves before night races, and keep them alert and focused.” stated Karlheinz Waibel, federal trainer for science and technology at the German Skiing Association.

The glasses will be equipped with about 20 LEDs, and will offer a light intensity that is several times brighter than in the office.

To achieve the desired results, athletes need to wear the glasses for about 15 minutes before the race. Flight passengers need to wear after a long flight.

“The LED glasses can be used by the airlines to reduce passengers’ jet lag. The glasses will speed up the adjustment according to the time of their destination through targeted light simulation.” said Osram biologist Andreas Wojtysiak.
