German automotive giant Volkswagen’s electric SUV ID.4 uses in-car lights to communicate with passengers. Placed under the windshield, 54 LEDs communicate with passengers using both lighting patterns and colors.

When the driver enters the vehicle, a welcome animation consisting of white and blue colors greets him. Since the ID.4 is an electric vehicle, there is no engine noise to indicate whether the engine is running or not. A special lighting display informs the driver whether the vehicle is running or not.

The lighting system continues to guide the driver while the vehicle is in motion. A flashing red light warns the driver when a vehicle, pedestrian or object is detected that will require the driver to brake suddenly. The lighting system, which can work with the navigation system, shows the driver the direction of turn with the help of a blue light and sliding animation.

Apart from these, a flashing green light indicates a phone call. It responds to the voice commands of the driver and passengers with a white light in front of their eyes.

The lighting also communicates with people outside the vehicle. The green status bar that appears during charging makes it possible to see the charge level from outside the vehicle.

Volkswagen engineers found this innovative solution while looking for new ways to communicate with the driver that would help minimize distraction while driving. More features are expected to be added to the system with software updates. This feature, which comes as a standard in all hardware packages of ID.4, may appear in other vehicles over time.
