SOFTSTONE is a mid-rise office building located in Tehran city center, which is changing rapidly and transforming to a mixture of residential and non-residential urban area.

The leader of the project is Mr. Sina Mostafavi, founder of award-winning studio Setup Architecture, with whom I had the opportunity to talk about SOFTSTONE lighting design concept, before writing my article.

SOFTSTONE, has a monolithic volume built by local stone, with different sizes used in different layers. This usage of stone elements gives a dynamic aspect to the façade. There are two different materials and colors on the façade. Natural stone with its light color and dark color of the windows frames.

The main idea of the SOFTSTONE‘s façade lighting design is to have a gentle light towards the stone details.

To mark the details, in the balconies light is focused up towards to the top corners and in windows down towards to the concavities at  the bottom corners.

4000 K LED luminaires with different light intensities are used inside the windows and balconies. They are installed on the opening frames and adjusted to catch the right direction.

Lighting was on the table from the beginning of our architectural design.” says Sina Mostafavi.

SOFTSTONE lighting concept proves us this discours.

Really very minimalist in one hand but in the other, it shows us that architectural details help  the designer to create an admirable illumination and of course vice versa, an integrated illumination with the structure of a building can enhance the work.

Special thanks to Sina Mostafavi
