Nichia, the world’s largest LED Manufacturer and inventor of the high-brightness blue and white LEDs, announces a new dual function LED that provides both white light and high doses of energy geared for inactivation of various prevalent bacteria.

With the continued surge of COVID-19 and the global impact across the globe, there is a heightened awareness to cleanliness in all aspects of life. While this certainly applies to viruses, it also applies to various types of bacteria present in our daily living environments.

Typical bacteria examples that cause infections are Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. Additionally, Escherichia coli (e-coli, O157) which causes food poisoning, continues to plague various parts of the world and remains problematic.

Throughout its 65-year history, Nichia has always worked hard to contribute to society through development of innovative products, including LEDs. To assist with the global efforts in reducing these harmful bacteria, Nichia has developed a new, innovative white LED also capable of inactivating bacteria. Nichia has released the new NF2W585AR-P8, a 4.0mm x 3.6mm LED, a staple of Nichia’s general lighting portfolio.

It has been well-known for years that UV-C and UV-B wavelengths, ranging from 200-380 nm, has been used for disinfection. However, it has recently been proven that visible light, ranging from 380-420 nm, also has a bacteria disinfection effect.

The NF2W585AR-P8 is an LED solution with a peak pump emission wavelength of 405 nm. Through Nichia’s leading phosphor and die technology which has been refined over decades of innovation, Nichia is able to achieve the balance between general white lighting and disinfection bacteria, all out of a single LED.

Nichia envisions this LED will be widely used for environmental hygiene maintenance in food factories, kitchens, hospitals, public facilities, and similar applications.
