Today, in the corona period, home working is our new reality. When we talk about designing home offices, lighting is the major factor that affects the overall comfort and concentration while working.

Most of us, found ourselves unexpectedly working from home due to COVID-19 restrictions. We need to create healthy and comfortable work areas in our homes to keep our morale high and focus on our work while we are at home.

Since home offices are privat spaces, they are compatible with people’s characters and working habits. However, it is necessary to make a healthy and correct choice in lighting, for example, as in work chairs.

The quality of lighting in our workspaces affects our productivity, to reach this quality, we need to combine natural and artificial light during our  working hours.

Natural Light

Natural light is the most important type of light in a space that we should profit as much as possible.  Working close to a window provides natural light, and also the connection with the outside world keeps our morale high.

What are the benefits of natural light?

  • Boost productivity,
  • Reduce fatigue and promote better sleep patterns,
  • Sunlight triggers the release of serotonin,
  • Energy saving.

Artificial Light

We need more light for some tasks than others. And also we may need a different type of light for one task over another. It is important to identify roles of the home office space and create layers of light.

Three Light Layers for Home Offices

Ambient Lighting, using central light fixtures to provide overall illumination. A beautiful pendant can give us plenty of light and add a nice touch to our decoration. Simple recessed downlights also can start a modern home office while providing a general light source.

Focused Task Lighting, task lights are bright focal lights that will help us achieve a specific task or subsets. Daily tasks such as computer work, reading, and writing can be enhanced with a quality task/desk light. A light source focused on the task area allows us to see the details. With an adjustable and dimmable desk lamp, we can adapt the light source angle for working in different scenarios. Having light behind the computer screen will diffuse the screen brightness and reduce the harshness of reflected light.

Accent lighting, in addition to the two functional lights, ambient, and task lights, we may want to add decorative or accent lights to improve the workplace visuality. The easiest ways to accent light for home office spaces is to use LED light strips under the shelves, place a table lamp on a coffee table, highlight an artwork or an architectural detail with a track light.

To obtain the right lighting in the workplace, we must plan layered lighting with correctly selected and installed light sources.

Choosing the Best Lighting for Your Home Office

  • Light distribution type of a fixture, a mixture of direct and indirect lighting will create optimum lighting without glare and sharp shadows.
  • Color temperature and color rendering index of the light source, 3000K-4000K is suitable to maintain focus and concentration.
  • Control system, a dimmable and tunable product can help adjust lighting levels and color temperatures through the different periods of the day.
  • Adjustability of the product, an adjustable or articulated desk lamp can provide light exactly where we need it and support a variety of tasks.

We need good lighting in our home offices not only for ourselves. Nowadays, we have to do our meetings and several activities online from our home office. For example lighting can impact how we can communicate in a ZOOM meeting because a bad lighting set-up can cause a lot of visual distraction. It is crucial to avoid having a direct light source behind us, as the contrast will be too high for the camera. To illuminate ourselves from above or below will be unflatterring. It is better to use two different light sources positioned on either side of the computer to minimize shadows. Also all the light sources should to be the same color temperature in the room.

With an home office lighting layout that you will prepare by paying attention to the issues I mentioned above, you can reach to the following benefits;

  • Reducing fatigue and headaches
  • Minimizing eye strain and discomfort
  • Increasing mood
  • Motivating and encouraging productivity
  • Saving energy

Finally, I suggest you experiment with light to create the best working environment for you. Because the materials, colors and textures you use in the room will create different effects in different lighting schemes.
